Discover Seoul’s Hidden Gem: Unhyeongung Palace – A Peaceful Escape in the Heart of the City

Step into the elegance of Joseon-era Hanok, a traditional Korean house, at Unhyeongung Palace.

When visiting Seoul, many travelers rush to the grand palaces like Gyeongbokgung or Changdeokgung. But if you’re looking for a quieter, more personal encounter with traditional Korean architecture, Unhyeongung is a must-visit.

Located in the heart of Jongno, just a short walk from Anguk Station, Unhyeongung is a former royal residence and a deeply historical site connected to Korea’s transition from the Joseon Dynasty into the modern era. It was once the home of Heungseon Daewongun, the powerful regent and father of Emperor Gojong, the 26th king of Joseon. Unhyeongung holds stories of political reform, royal life, and turbulent change—making it a fascinating stop for history lovers.

Unlike the larger palaces, Unhyeongung offers a calm, intimate experience. You can stroll freely through its beautiful hanok courtyards and traditional wooden buildings such as Norakdang, Noandang, and Irodang. In spring, the blooming plum blossoms (Prunus mume) add a touch of color and serenity to the scene. And during the summer heat, the on-site exhibition hall offers a refreshing break indoors.

What makes Unhyeongung special?

1. Rich History - A glimpse into royal power

Unhyeongung was the private residence of Heungseon Daewongun, the father of King Gojong and one of Korea’s most powerful political figures in the 19th century. As regent for a decade, he led major reforms to strengthen royal authority—many of which were directed from this very residence.

Connected by a private gate to the royal palace, Unhyeongung served as both a home and a political hub during Korea’s transition into the modern era. Today, it offers visitors a rare look into the personal life of Joseon royalty outside the main palace walls, blending elegance with historical depth.

2. Cultural Events & Classes

Check out the many cultural experiences held here—traditional crafts, hanbok experiences, and even one-day classes that let you connect with Korean heritage hands-on.

3. Traditional Weddings & Photoshoots

If you’re lucky, you might witness a Korean traditional wedding or a photo session in beautiful hanbok attire. It’s a unique cultural encounter you won’t get elsewhere.
